Poultry Litter

Poultry Litter is Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) approved for organic use and is an excellent source of nutrients that can be incorporated into most fertilizer programs. The key to successful management is to match the nutritional requirements of the crop with nutrients available in the Poultry Litter and supplemental fertilizers.

Poultry Litter is sawdust-based and is an excellent source of organic matter. Organic matter is of utmost importance in potato crop rotation in Aroostook County. A four tons per acre application of Poultry Litter would add the value of a plow-down rotation crop.

Recommendations:

  • Agriculture

A typical potato rotation requires 180 lbs N, 140 lbs P and 240 lbs K. Casella Organics recommends an application rate of 4 tons/acre of Poultry Litter applied in the fall and tilled into the soil. The available nutrients from this application equal 80 lbs N, 140 lbs P and 112 lbs K. The remaining supplemental nutrient requirements at planting would be 100 lbs N, 0 lbs P and 128 lbs K.
